2 LOST DOGS UP ON OUR TRAILS....
September 21
Please watch for a couple of spaniels who went missing yesterday on Passmore, near our Silver Star Chalet.
The following are email pleas for help from Sue and Wolfgang (dog owners):
Hi,
I love walking the trails at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre with my two spaniels. Yesterday, they caught a scent and I lost them. I walk there everyday for two hours.
They were last seen on Passmore, about a 5 minute walk below the Snowmobilers Cabin in a very wet area. They ran into the bush and I couldn't get them out and they are now lost.
Yesterday, the worst happened: my two dogs, Bess and Lara got away from me at 11:00 am. I searched for 12 hours and even spent part of the night up there calling them with my husband. No luck. I am fairly familiar with the trails. We start again at daylight to search for them.
If, on the off chance, you get this not and are there today or can contact your trail groomer who may be there (no one was there yesterday) can you please tell them to keep an eye out for Bess and Lara. They are females, spayed, 45 lbs. each, medium height, micro-chipped, tattooed in ear. Wearing collars, with ID tags and RDNO licenses. They have e-collars on.
They are friendly, but not road savvy. They will come out if you see them or call to them. Just coax them with you and put them in your maintenance hut. We drive the red Toyota Matrix and will be parked up there and we will come as soon as we can to get them.
Our cell (though it doesn't work up there) is 250-308-5943

Thank you Thank you Thank you and God Bless- REWARD offered. Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE AS OF 5:00 SEPTEMBER 21:
Hi Everyone,
Just an update - we still haven't found them and we double-backed on each trail at Sovereign Lake. My husband did an extensive grid search in the specific area where I last saw them - they were moving towards the Park Boundary on Passmore back up to Ganzeveld and the Cabin (that's my theory). There are just so many intersections there that I think they got totally lost after chasing the grouse or whatever it was and that they could no longer hear me. I did what good hunters say to do and stayed in one spot for two hours and then double backed to the intersections, Cabin, the parking lot and looped again. We stayed at the cabin til 10:30 pm last night and called and whistled, but no luck.
It is our theory (after studying the Silver Star Nordic and snowmobile map) that we were so close to the Park Boundary and that they have crossed to the other side and onto Silver Star. It is our hope that they may end up in the Village somehow. We did EVERY trail in Sovereign Lake today and they never came to our calls. They would for sure be on a trail and not in the bush now. They weren't even in the Sovereign Lake Village and we went there many times.
So, tomorrow, I will try the Silver Star snowmobile trails and try to figure out how to make it down to the SSSR Village or up and vice versa. I just spoke with Ted Pleavin of the SSPOA and he will be sending out a mass e-mail to the property owners to watch for them in the village. The SSSR office is on it, has our poster up and have let the staff know about the situation.
I cannot express in words my gratitude to all of you for offering to help complete strangers. I am indebted to all of you. Thank you for your kindness. Bessie and Lara are the kindest pups in the world and they are so happy and trusting that they counted on me and I failed them. So I feel heartbroken.
A special thanks to Diane.

NB from Dianne:
Wolfgang is meeting with Brian Corke tomorrow (Thurs) who will take him around on quad. Can anyone else help out?
UPDATE AS OF THURSDAY SEPT 22, A.M.:
"Hi Dianne,
Do you think it might be feasible, possible, allowable to have a search party on Saturday morning at around 10 am at the Snowmobile gate - coul;d be by foot or by quad (we don;t have one - may be able to rent one). We would reimburse club members for gas. I could get it out there on Kijiji or Facebook, not sure when the Morning Star's deadline is for making news today - but could ask Rolke to make it a special interest case or put a big ad and ask people to come to the parking lot.
Off to the Mountain now and then back home at 778-475-1103 at 11:00 am to check voicemail and e-mail. You could call me then if you'd like and give me a yay or nay or tell me to back off. This may be a lost cause, but time still may be on my side.
Thank you and sorry to reach out to you so much. Suzanne

Hi, Suzanne, sorry just got to my email now. Anyway, we've discussed this on the phone - great to meet you, by the way but sure wish it was under happier circumstances.
As I said, the only way we could open the gate to the public on quads is if there was a VSA member accompanying them. Which, of course, would mean that 40 NON-members going off in 40 different directions would require 40 VSA members as well.
I'm going to cc this email to our members and see if anyone can find some time Saturday morning to help out on quad (don't know how many members even HAVE quads) but it's worth a try, or on foot. Course a VSA member on foot could catch a ride on the quad (if it seats 2 somehow).
No problem inviting the public on foot though. It's just the Parks restriction on quad-ing. Outside of the Park (i.e. our Forest trails down near the Armstrong cabin) do not have the restriction.
Praying for you and Wolfgang and your "kids" and that they'll be found safe and soon.
Dianne
VSA members - you see the predicament we're in. We really want to help Suz and Wolfgang but they're limited in what they can do to get reinforcements to help with a search party because of the Parks restriction we have on quads. If you can help. PLEASE give me a call at 250-546-0980 or Suzanne (number below), or email one of us. They REALLY need help to find their beloved pets. Brian is up on the mountain as of this morning with his quad and Wolfgang. But more quads, more people, more eyes would be a blessing. Thanks everyone.

Search party?
If anyone would like to help organize a volunteer search party to look for Bess and Lara (on foot or on quad) that would be awesome. Brian Corke has volunteered to help (he has a quad and a key to the gate). Please note that our Park trails are normally off-limits to quads but we have been given 1-time special permission from Parks to allow us to help with this search. Note that any non-VSA members on ATVs MUST be accompanied by a VSA member. Also, the trails will likely be in rough shape with deadfall and ruts so you're cautioned to please be careful, and stay away from wet areas.
If you can help out, please call Brian at 250-395-4397 or email the club at www.vernonsnowmobileclub.org and I'll pass it on. Thanks so much!

Dogs found! Bessie and Lara are safe...thank you to all who helped.
September 22
They were found at the maintenance hut at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre about 2 pm by Scott Lemon (Club Manager) and his awesome sidekick. Not sure if they found them there or the dogs were waiting there when Scott showed up, but they called us right away (we were plastering SSSR with flyers) and the dogs were waiting in the hut for us.
We got them to the vet right away. Bessie had to be carried as something is wrong with her paw. Their eyes are sunken in and they are suffering from extreme dehydration. They are on IV fluids now at the vet and will stay over night as they need antibiotics and some observation of unspecified injuries. The main thing is that they could still wag their tails after 50 hours in the bush!
How do I begin to thank all of you? I can't. My husband and I are so deeply indebted to all of you with our gratitude and I have no way to accurately summarize it than to return the favour to each of you one day. My contact information is below, I will be glad to volunteer for any duty when any of your clubs need help. My husband is a Forester and can help you in any way possible. I am an awesome volunteer who has never skied a day in her life and is kinda afraid of heights, but will come to groom trails or marshall races or whatever you need. Just call me - we're there for you too!
Thank you.
